Following the IS101 overall guidelines, 50% of your grade will be related to the "Common Content" and 50% related to the "Focus Content". The common content for the most part will involve the IS101 Reader and the Persepolis novel. The focus content is primarily the "Calendars and Culture" material.
Formal Papers: We will be doing seven papers, of varying length. On the Common Content Side we will be doing three short papers tied to the thematic units of the reader and a paper tied to the Persepolis novel. On the Focus Content Side (calendars) we will be doing a (1) Mini paper and a (2) Midi paper and a (3) Maxi paper. The Maxi paper will be a component of the "Final Project" and will contain elements of both common and focus content. The three calendar papers will also involve class presentations of increasing length and formality. See paper descriptions
Quizzes: We will have approximately 7 quizzes . The format will be a short (1 page) essay in response to a choice of one out of two or three possible questions. Some of the quizzes may be given outside of class on an 'overnight' timeline allowing the student to use class resources. Students will work individually. On the quizzes, as informal papers, there will be a much reduced emphasis on formatting and grammar and more emphasis on content and how well the essay addresses the chosen question. Considerations as the course progresses will determine the exact number of quizzes (not to exceed 7)
Daily Writing:Nearly every class period will involve some informal writing. e.g., responses to discussion questions, summary of small group discussion, reactions to readings, lectures etc... See daily written for actual assignments
